ACAS AT THE SINGAPORE TOY & COMIC CONVENTION 2008
The weekend was spent signing & lining-up new Lifetime Members & Student Members. Also helping to raise funds was the selling of various comics and books. The 2006 Nice One Entertainment compilation entitled, Singapore's Greatest Comics, was a popular sell-out.
The crew executed multiple non-stop live art demos, both traditional and digital. Pictured first is Zaki, the ACAS treasurer, with founder member Wahid doing their 'thang' in front of many spectators.
Pictured below that is young Din. Soon to join ACAS as a Lifetime Member, this guess artist demonstrated both traditional and digital art techniques. On behalf of our partners, Peripheral Solutions & Wacom, the booth shifted many leaflets with info about the various tablets demonstrated.
Din was in fact the inker of the Tom DeFalco & Jerry Hinds Singapore Sling story, which features in the Official Con Comic.
And below Din is the ACAS President going through a few pointers with another young artist. He hardly had time to do any drawing, but was able to help out with a few Caricatures for master Caricaturist & ACAS Secretary, Osman, who unbelievably drew well over 100 eagre 'models' over the weekend!

TALES OF THE LION CITY -
This manga-sized A5, black & white comic is a compilation of short stories all based in and around Singapore.
Spearheaded by the Association of Comic Artists (S) (ACAS) in conjunction with Singapore Toy & Comic Convention 2008 (STCC), the anthology will get off to a bright start with a foreword by world famous writer Tom DeFalco. He is the current writer of Spider-Girl, also the longest running writer in the history of Spider-Man, and ex-Marvel Comics Editor-In-Chief.
Tom was asked to 'do the honours', as he actually wrote the first ever full script for Singapore Sling, a local super-hero concept that was created by ACAS president, Jerry Hinds. It's believed that Singapore Sling, aka Crissy Lee Mei Li, is the first ever Singapore based super-hero to be published internationally.
Also featured in the book will be other folklore heroes tinged with a modern twist, such as Zaki Ragman's, Badang - the Malay legendary folk hero, who was renowned for his mighty physical strength. Amongst other exciting stories & poster art, comes Vinox & Monica - plotted & drawn by Suthep Chotewijit, this tale of a young girl and her pet dragon is a deep & meaningful comedy phantasy, set in a fictional Sing-City of the future. That story will play its part in really demonstrating the wonderful diversity of creative comic talent which is to be found here.
We are most thankful to STCC for supporting the idea of an Official ConComic, and are extremely proud to be playing an active part of this the first ever - Singapore Toy & Comic Convention. And for every copy sold, a donation of $1 will be made to a charity fund in support of the victims of the Sichuan earthquake disaster.

We'll be constantly trying new ways to bring comic inspired artwork to the community. It will be the ideal time for you to ask about ACAS Membership and what it could mean to you in terms of various incentives, including opportunities to have your work published!

ACAS @ PLAZA SINGAPURA - Level 6
Sun 18th & Mon 19th May 2008, 12 noon - 7pm
Between demonstrating digital art techniques and traditional comicbook illustration, we had great fun producing special promotional-priced caricatures - always a firm crowd pleaser!

Jerry took a couple of Osman's celebrity caricatures, and demonstrated the speed and power of digital colouring. The originals still included characteristic grey marker pen shading - a fun case of the old meeting the new.
Many people gathered to see Zaki demonstrate his digital painting techniques. Both the old and young had a lot of questions to ask.

Zaki was also our resident photographer, and here now is a snap of him in action, using the Wacom Bamboo tablet. He demonstrated both Corel Painter & Adobe Photoshop.
Here's new ACAS Member, Sam, not only signing on the dotted line, but also feeling inspired enough to have a quick doodle himself!
